01 Overview
This module is a DC-DC boost converter based on the MAX1771 current-mode PWM controller, stepping 12V DC input up to 220V DC output.
It solves the problem of low-voltage DC supplies not being able to directly drive high-voltage devices, providing a compact and efficient solution for Nixie tubes, tube amplifiers, and other high-voltage DC loads.
The board includes a power inductor, MOSFET, flyback diode, and feedback resistor divider; output voltage is adjustable via a trimmer potentiometer to suit different loads.
Unlike isolated supplies, this is a non-isolated boost topology with common ground between input and output, so safety precautions are necessary.
Ideal for DIY vacuum tube projects, Nixie tube clocks, high-voltage testing, and as a bench high-voltage DC source.
02 Hardware
Controller: MAX1771 current-mode boost controller with integrated gate driver, switching frequency ~300kHz.
Input: 12V DC, recommended supply current ≥2A depending on load; input terminals VIN/GND.
Output: up to 220V DC, set by feedback resistor divider; output terminals VOUT/GND.
Power inductor: e.g., 100µH, must handle peak current; saturation current should exceed maximum switch current.
